Podle dnes zveřejněné zprávy deníku Wall Street Journal se divize Starlink společnosti SpaceX ani zdaleka nepřiblížila plánům zákazníků a příjmů, které společnost sdělila investorům před vybudováním sítě družic poskytujících připojení k internetu.

Když v roce 2015 společnost lákala investory, údajně předpokládala, že v roce 2022 bude mít Starlink 20 milionů předplatitelů a vygeneruje téměř 12 miliard dolarů příjmů a 7 miliard dolarů provozního zisku. Wall Street Journal uvádí, že získal prezentaci z roku 2015 a nedávné dokumenty s čísly o skutečném příjmu Starlinku v roce 2022. Síť má nyní jen něco málo přes 1,5 milionu uživatelů, jak potvrdil Jonathan Hofeller, viceprezident společnosti SpaceX pro Starlink a komerční prodej.

Skutečné příjmy Starlinku v roce 2022 činily 1,4 miliardy dolarů, což je o 222 milionů dolarů více než v roce 2021, uvádí zpráva. Zisk společnosti za první kvartál letošního roku byl 55 milionů dolarů. Firmě se alespoň podařilo snížit cenu terminálů natolik, že je neprodává se ztrátou. Původně je vyráběla za více než tisíc dolarů a prodávala je za polovinu.
