Vyšla další verze známého požírače výkonu zvaného StarOffice. Číslo verze je tentokrát 5.1.
Hoši z Creative Labs zveřejnili další verzi ovladačů pro Sound Blaster Live!

Středa 19. 5.
KMySql je grafické rozhraní k databázovému serveru MySQL. Tedy bylo to rozhraní k MySQL, dnes už je to, díky modulární architektuře, platforma pro práci s libovolným SQL serverem, stačí mít ten správný modul. Potíž je v tom, že jediným existujícím modulem je zatím právě ten k MySQL, ale pracuje se na modulech pro PostgreSQL a ODBC. Pokud máte zájem, můžete se podílet, autor hledá contributory. Podle mých krátkých zkušeností se jedná o solidní aplikaci, která je navíc navržena velice inteligentně. Práce s ní je celkem intuitivní, kromě přímého volání SQL dotazu lze ještě definovat tzv. forms, které pak umožňují pracovat s SQL přes GUI. Možná by jenom neškodilo rozšířit funkce o grafickou konstrukci SQL dotazů, což jednak usnadňuje práci a jednak by to jistě pomohlo méně zkušeným uživatelům.
RealNetworks konečně dotáhli linuxovou verzi RealPlayeru G2 alespoň do stádia alpha verze. Co se mě týká, myslím, že tato verze je mnohem použitelnější, než předchozí RealPlayer 5.0. Je fakt, že ho testuji zatím jenom krátce, ale běhá slušně, nepadá a dokonce mu i fungují menu a tlačítka, což u verze 5.0 vůbec nebylo jisté :)

Úterý 18. 5.
Pokud vám chybí nějaký grafický file manager, můžete vyzkoušet gentoo. Vychází z klasického dvoupanelového schématu a jeho hlavními zbraněmi jsou malá velikost a velká konfigurovatelnost :) Zajímavé vlastnosti jsou například barevné rozlišení různých typů souborů, spouštění externích prohlížečů, gentoo je navíc plně konfigurovatelné přes grafické rozhraní.
Objevila se nová beta verze ovladačů Glide pro 3Dfx karty Voodoo Banshee III.

Pondělí 17. 5.
Alan Cox již opět plodí jeden patch za druhým, tentokrát jde o první patch pro kernel 2.3.3. To se nám ta vývojová řada ale pěkně rozjela :)
Scintilla je projekt komponenty, která by programátorům umožňovala snadno začlenit do svých aplikací editor s vlastnostmi jako je například zvýraznění syntaxe nebo doplňování slov. Scintilla existuje ve verzi pro GTK+ a Windows.
Chcete provozovat vlastní internetové rádio? Pak byste měli zkusit produkt IceDJ. Jde o nadstavbu k Icecast serveru, což je systém pro streamované vysílání audia ve formátu MP3, kompatibilní s komerčním serverem Shoutcast. IceDJ dokáže takové kousky, jako náhodné přehrávání, generování stránek s informacemi o aktuální skladbě, streamování do několika serverů s různými bitrate, sestavování Top10 nejžádanějších skladeb a podobně.

Neděle 16. 5.
S nostalgií a slzou v oku jistě nejeden čtenář zavzpomíná na staré dobré Commodory. Proč ale jenom vzpomínat, když existuje VICE, Versatile Commodore Emulator, hračka, která umí emulovat C64, C128, VIC20 a PET?
gFTP je grafický FTP klient s podporou drag n' drop, simultánními přenosy a mnoha dalšími vymoženostmi. Podle mého skromného názoru vypadá podobně jako windowsovské WS-FTP, což byl podle mne hodně dobrý klient.
Zajímavým projektem je EasyGTK. Jde o wrapper, který umožňuje psát GTK programy v mnohem úspornějším a přehlednějším kódu. Typicky je prý kód s EasyGTK asi 5× až 6× kratší, než přímo s GTK. Na druhou stranu za to zřejmě zaplatíte poněkud nižší rychlostí, ovšem u grafického rozhraní by to nemělo být nijak kritické či znatelné.

Sobota 15. 5.
Jestliže jste nešťastným uživatelem dialup připojení a nedisponujete neomezeným kontem (což se konec konců vylučuje :), určitě by se vám hodil nějaký monitor, pomocí kterého by jste mohli snadno ohlídat, jak dlouho jste připojení a tedy i jak moc to ovlivní váš rozpočet. Programů, které takový monitoring dělají je celkem dost, ale AfterStep Billing monitor je celkem unikátní. Jde totiž o applet pro AfterStep windows manager. Vypadá celkem sympaticky.
Správci serveru dobře vědí, jak důležité je server chránit před možnými útoky. Jednou z cest je zabránění posílání nešifrovaných hesel po síti. Proto dnes SecureShell houfně nahrazuje obyčejný telnet. Ovšem SSH verze 2 je zdarma pouze pro nekomerční použití a to nemohlo zůstat bez reakce od vývojářů free softwaru. Jejich počin se jmenuje lsh a je zatím ve stádiu masivního vývoje. Přesto jsou již průběžné verze k dispozici na testování. Tak směle do toho…

Pátek 14. 5.
Bez velkého humbuku se na serverech Netscape corp. objevil Navigator resp. Communicator 4.6. Jde v podstatě jenom o verzi opravující některé chyby, nic převratného.
Další grafické rozhraní k systému CVS se jmenuje Cervisia. Je určen pro KDE a vypadá zvláštně a originálně. A to jde teprve o verzi 0.0.1
V případě, že si příliš nerozumíte s konfigurací Lila, můžete zkusit glilo. Jde o grafické konfigurační rozhraní napsané s použitím GTK.
